Pandora's Box

YESIM USTAOGLU
Turkey, 2008, 112 minutes, Color

When an old woman, Nusret, played by veteran French actress Tsilla Chelton, disappears in a small Black Sea town, her estranged children travel from their homes in Istanbul to find her. The journey and process of finding Nusret unleashes long-kept animosities, fears, and false relationships like evils from Pandora's Box. Nusret's children eventually discover that their mother is suffering from Alzheimer's. When none of them can relate to her, it falls to Murat, her teenage grandson to bring her to peace and a sense of deliverance. Pandora's Box won Best Film and Best Actress awards at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. —New York Turkish Film Festival
